Hey fashionistas!
I’m so happy to share another post with all of you. Let’s see what we have for today.
You’ve probably heard about grunge style and probably you may not know exactly what it means. Read this material and you will know for sure.
If you want a definition heres one from wikipedia:
‘The most important event in 1990s fashion was the rise of Grunge fashion in 1992. Grunge fashion was influenced by grunge music, which achieved mainstream popularity in 1992, due to the mainstream success of Nirvana and their hit single Smells Like Teen Spirit. The grunge style resulted in a decline in bright colours, and was dominated by plaid flannel shirts, stonewashed blue jeans, and dark colours like maroon, forest green, indigo, and brown. White and black were also popular colours in grunge style. It was considered the most depressing, angst filled style.
Grunge fashion popularized Doc Martens style shoes and boots, and high-top sneakers in red, indigo, forest green, and black (such as Chuck Taylor All-Stars). It emphasized long hair, which most teen and pre-teen girls already had, and which a few teen and pre-teen boys adopted. Grunge fashion was a unisex phenomenon. Although the grunge look was considered “anti-fashion”, the fashion industry made it a distinct fashion style by selling plaid items like hooded sweatshirts, sweatshirt vests, long sleeved t-shirts and shorts. Grunge fashion remained popular through 1994.
Though flannel plaid shirts remained popular through 1997, fashion started to move away from many of the other plaid styles in 1994. Waffle-patterns became popular on sweatshirts and polo shirts with colours such as white, beige and red, and remained popular until 1995. Olive green t-shirts, sweatshirts and dress shirts were all the rage in 1994 and 1995. Olive green remained more or less popular through 1998. Grey also became popular, and Oatmeal and wheat started to become popular with girls and women. Bowling shirts became popular, and remained more or less popular for the remainder of the 1990s. In the fall of 1994, bell-bottom jeans were replaced with wide-leg jeans. White denim became fashionable among guys as well as girls.’
HOW TO DRESS GRUNGE
Do you want to learn how to dress in the grungy style? Follow this steps:
1. HAIR STYLING
It can be long or short, preferably messy, as if you have just woken up. If you like, you can dye your hair different colors. Also, it can be curled or straight doesn’t matter.
2. WEAR ANY SHIRT YOU FEEL GOOD WITH
However, if you want to dress in true grunge style, do not jump for the bright, bold colours. Just make sure you are comfortable. A very popular item is flannel. If you can’t do flannel, get a long-sleeve shirt and wear a band t-shirt over it (Pearl Jam, Nirvana, etc.)
3. GET SOME JEANS AND RIP THEM YOURSELF
Do not purchase pre-ripped jeans, they cost a lot and they do not have good quality. Do whatever you want with your jeans after ripping them. Add patches, sew random fabrics on them, color them with fabric markers… Do anything you want!
4. WEAR BOOTS
Just be sure to make them look grungy and old – it’s how most grungers wear them.
5. LEARN FROM THE BEST
Observe the things that famous grungers such as Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love wore through pictures (But don’t copy them, it will be obvious!) Get a general idea and get creative to benefit YOUR style of grunge.
6. LAYERS
Try to layer as much as you can. Layers are important in the grunge style. If you live somewhere where it is hot year round or hot in the summer, noticeably layer tee shirts when it get’s hot. Just remember to be creative and you’ll do fine.
Hope that was useful and remember:
There isn’t a real guide to being grunge; just wear what you want and do not let anything hold you back. Just have fun and do what you want!
